Obedience to God_Part 3

By Godswill Etu

From the previous part and interpreting the context of Isaiah 1:18-19 in the light of Christ, we see that the believer is one who is willing and obedient.

He is not one trying or struggling to obey God because we obeyed when we believed.

The moment we believed in Jesus, we received the obedience of Christ as ours through His vicarious substitutionary sacrifice.

His obedience in His Death, Burial and Resurrection became our obedience when we believed on Him and received the gift of righteousness.

“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous” (Rom. 5:19).

“And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. AND THIS IS HIS COMMANDMENT, THAT WE SHOULD BELIEVE ON THE NAME OF HIS SON JESUS CHRIST, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us”. (1Jo 3:22-24).

Believing in Jesus Christ is to have kept and obeyed all the commandments of God.

In the Book of Acts, and Hebrews those who believe in Christ’s eternal work are described as them that obey Him. Believing is obedience…

“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; AND SO IS ALSO THE HOLY GHOST, WHOM GOD HATH GIVEN TO THEM THAT OBEY HIM” (Act 5:31-32).

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Heb 5:9)

That’s why nowhere in the New Testament is the Believer commanded to obey God. Rather the Bible describes believers as Obedient Children because of Faith in the Obedience of Christ.

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; AS OBEDIENT CHILDREN, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:” (1Pet.1:13-14)

He calls us Obedient Children. Because that’s who we are.

Don’t ever see yourself in the light of your failures and flaws. Don’t see yourself in the light of who you used to be before you came to Jesus. Don’t see yourself as one who is still trying to catah up with the standard of God.

Rather, see yourself as a New Creature in Christ Jesus, a loved Child of a Love God, the one who has obeyed.

‘Whatever we do now is not in a struggle to obey God, but from the position of our obedient Status in Christ’.

The Apostles said;

“…We ought to obey God rather than men”. (Act 5:29),

Contextually, they meant they couldn’t bow to pressures to stop preaching the gospel. And preaching the gospel is an obedient response to the obedience of Believing the Gospel.

Doing the word in whatever form is a response to the obedience of having believed The WORD which by the gospel was preached to us.

Even in obeying instructions from those who have been placed over us in the body of Christ, We do it with the understanding that we are obedient children of God and so we line up with the desire of our Father. We act as obedient believers because that’s who we are.

See yourself as an obedient Child of God, living out that obedient life in fervency and fervour.

Say these words OUT LOUD with Me:

I am who The Word says I am
I have what the word Says I have
I can do all that the word says I can do.
I am an obedient Child of God.
And I do not struggle to do all that the word says i can do.
