Obedience to God_Part 1

By Godswill Etu

A lot of times believers tend to make a mountain out of a mole hill, all because of a lack of understanding.

But know this, once any information about God puts the believer under any pressure to perform or impress God or man, such a person may have been misinformed or wrongly taught.

Adequate understanding of God brings us absolute peace and confidence in Christ.

What are the commandments of God?

Is the believer instructed to keep the commandments of God? Are we demanded to obey the commandments or Laws of God?

First we must know that man had always had a “doing mentality”, trying to please God by his actions. But it never worked.

Man came up with so many do’s and don’ts right from Old Testament which he was still not able to keep.

Man had always been under pressure to keep up with the standards of God yet he still failed. So many sacrifices, yet it didn’t work.

In fact the Scripture described man’s attempts toward becoming right as filthy rags in the sight of God.

”But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away”. (Isa 64:6)

Man was given so many laws; expected to love God with all His might and soul as we find in the Old Testament.

“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and TO DO ALL HIS COMMANDMENTS WHICH I COMMAND THEE THIS DAY, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth” (Deut. 28:1)

“And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deut. 11:13)

Then Jesus though born under the law compressed all the Laws man was meant to keep into one or maybe two.

“Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”. (Matt. 22:35-40)

However a Question comes to mind here: How can one love the Lord with all His might? God, we cannot see. What is the measure of the might? All by himself, man remained helpless.

So Jesus came!

In Christ we have an understanding of our Position; that we are in Him. His death was our death. His Life was our Life.

“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life”. (1Jn 5:20)

Jesus fulfilled what was required of us in the Law on our behalf because man could not keep it. So Jesus’ doing was our doing.

Man needed help in keeping up with the requirements of obedience to the Law. So Jesus took our place in that obedience. Jesus Obeyed God on our behalf in paying the sacrifice of our inability to obey, by dying for us.

”Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied”. (1Pet. 1:2)

Observe that, Apostle Peter described the Sprinkling of the Blood of Jesus Christ, connoting His finished work as Obedience.

The Writer of Hebrews talking about Jesus said this;

“Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, YET LEARNED HE OBEDIENCE BY THE THINGS WHICH HE SUFFERED” (Heb. 5:7-8).

From this Context, the things Jesus suffered are the things he suffered in His death and burial. And the Bible describes it as Him being obedient.

To learn here is to know fully. He came into full obedience via the suffering of the Cross. His yielding to death was obedience.
