A believer ought to know who He is in Christ. He must find his security in his identity with Christ. “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 6). The sharing of your faith is only as effective as the accurate and precise understanding of who you are in Christ. Paul’s prayer for Philemon centres on this reality “My prayer is that your fellowship with us in our common faith may deepen the understanding of all the blessings that our union with Christ brings us” (Phil. 6 NEB).
A believer who does not know who he is in Christ will be tossed to and fro by the changing circumstances of life. The opinions of men will mean so much to him. What he does right or doesn’t do right will be the yardstick by which he measures himself. He is as good as the commendation or the affirmation of men. Such a believer like Apostle James said “Is a double minded man unstable in all his ways” (Jam 1:8). Why is he double minded? He lacks a good understanding of God’s character “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (Jam. 1:5). God is a generous giver who never refuses nor reproaches anyone! What a man does not know about God hampers the effectiveness of his faith. An uninformed believer is an unstable believer. What you don’t know or you are not sure about brings doubt and instability.
There are unchanging truths about the believer in Christ. He is blessed with all spiritual blessings. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). Pay attention to the tenses in this verse, He didn’t say “He will bless us…” or “He will bless us when we sow special seeds…” Paul said “He has BLESSED US…” This truth is an eternal one. It is unconditional. He has blessed with some spiritual blessings? No! He has blessed us with ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS! Where? In the heavenlies in Christ. These blessings are spiritual and they are IN CHRIST. What the New English Bible calls “all the blessings that our union with Christ brings” “In CHRIST” is a term used to describe our identity or union with Christ.
Then Apostle Paul listed these blessings in the following verses as..
1. Chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world vs 4.
2. Holy and without blame in Him in love vs 4
3. Predestinated us unto adoption of children by Christ Jesus vs 5
4. Accepted in the beloved vs 6.
5. Redemption through his blood which is forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace vs 7
6. Abounded to us in all wisdom and prudence vs 8
7. Made known to us the mystery of His will vs.9
8. Obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to His purpose vs 11.
9. Sealed with the promised Spirit vs 13.
The believer is spiritually blessed with these blessings. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, hundred years from now, these blessings cannot change, they are as eternal as the One who gave them.
