The church is a house of spiritual growth. It is not a centre for entertainment, comedy or dissipation of energy which some call “high praises”. We sing or worship with a mindset of spiritual growth.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Col. 3:16).
Our songs must teach and admonish us.
“For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh” (Phil. 3:3).
We worship in the spirit and rejoice about the realities of who we are in Christ! Worship is spiritual and not an emotional display.
I often say that the believer has more to benefit from his singing than the One he is singing to or about.
That said, we must understand the purpose for the church.
It is a physical gathering of believers in Christ, unbelievers are welcome but they leave as believers.
It is not a social gathering but a spiritual one!
It is not attended by convenience, it is rather attended as a matter of commitment.
It was the practice of the early church to meet regularly.
“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple…” (Acts 2:42, 46a).
“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ” (Acts 5:42).
It was an apostolic injunction to believers to gather for spiritual edification.
“If therefore the whole church be come together into one place… How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying” (1Cor. 14:23,26)
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Heb. 10:25).
Church is not just a place where we go to receive something, we also bring something along to give. We come along with spiritual edification as we receive same!
There is a way we ought to behave in the local church.
“But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1Tim. 3:15).
You must be punctual, ready to serve and receive! No distraction, no side talks, your bible is opened and your writing materials in place.
Since the church is the pillar and ground of the truth and the Truth is Christ (Jn. 14:6), it means Christ is preached and taught there! (Col. 1:27-28)
“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Cor. 4:5).
The local church is God’s plan for ever believer and not a human idea.
Christian Television programs cannot replace church attendance. It doesn’t matter the preachers you listen to on social media, cable networks or radio, if you don’t belong to a local church where you are committed and receive instructions on a regular basis, you are self deluded and disobedient.
None of us can grow on his/her own!
A local church is required, a physical presence is needed.
When you find a local church where Christ is clearly taught in the light of His finished work, our identification with Him and the things of the Spirit are freely demonstrated, you should not allow anyone or anything to talk or take you out of there. Such churches are not easy to come by these days (But they are increasing in number).
It is also important we all keep an open mind about membership because there are no perfect churches. Like someone rightly said “If your local church was a perfect church, it ceased being one the day you joined” You are not flawless, so stop looking for flaws in others. It means that we will offend each other, step on each other’s toes, forgive one and another, learn from our mistakes and grow up spiritually together!
There is no better place to be than a Christ preaching, Spirit demonstrating and love practicing local church. Christ Revealing Church is that place for me! What about you?
