For the gospel to reach the world it will require finances. The intensity of the preaching of the gospel is the intensity of the cost that comes with it.
The gospel should be taught and preached freely, but the basis of that teaching and preaching is not free. It takes a lot to offer that free message to people. Thank God for prayer, worship but these do not make the gospel available to the world, it takes money, material things to make that gospel available to people. The proof that your heart is in something is that your money is in there. Your money represents your sweat and labour. Anybody can say “I am for the cause of the gospel” but it is your time, your money, your energy, your sacrifice that show you really are for the cause of the gospel.
“Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel” (1st Cor 9:7-14).
In other words it is an abuse for us as the Church of God when someone/ a missionary/ a pastor is going from place to place to preach the gospel or has pioneered a church work and we let them alone finance that mission. It is a sin, because it is OUR responsibility to pay for the cost of the preaching of the gospel…NO MAN GOES TO THE WARFARE AT HIS OWN CHARGES!
Hence every child of God ought to be a financier of the work of the gospel.
Verse 9…those that preach the gospel should live by the gospel! It is our duty to take care of our pastors independent of what they do to support themselves financially.
They have the right to reap carnal things haven sown spiritual things
Gal 6:6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
The J.B. Phillips translation says “The man under Christian instruction should be willing to contribute towards the livelihood of his teacher”
Who taught these people in question?
Paul! In context Paul was referring to himself.
Notice: he said GOOD THINGS!
So when I’m taught the Word, the Bible says to GIVE TO HIM WHO HAS TAUGHT ME THE WORD.
My teacher must partake from my material possessions. This is how much I appreciate his labour over me.
YOU ALSO GIVE REGULARLY TO WHERE YOU ARE BEING TAUGHT. Let me put it this way “PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS” I’m sure you have heard this expression before. It is outrightly wrong for you to be taught God’s Word somewhere and you don’t give generously there. It is tantamount to robbery! Your local church must reap carnal things because she supplies you spiritual things. Your pastor must feel the impact of your material support. It’s funny today that some come to church to take money or material things from the pastor and not to give to him. They feel because he has something he is doing by the side, he does not need any financial or material support. This is a wrong thinking devoid of scriptural inspiration.
It is our responsibility to take care of those that preach the Gospel to us on a regular basis, because when you take care of the minister of the gospel, you aid the preaching of the gospel. SO I MUSN’T TAKE THIS WITH LEVITY (1 Tim. 5:17).
The ministry of the gospel demands from us GIVING!
He was taken care of by men
Luk 8:2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
Luk 8:3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Minister means “to wait on someone”. They provided for his needs
In John 6;
Joh 6:8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
Joh 6:9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
When there was a need, people were hungry but there wasn’t much money in the purse i.e. people were to give and the young boy gave.
Anyone who gives to support the gospel has a guaranteed supply from heaven, one of the ways you know you will not lack is because you give financially to support the work of the gospel. Even though temporarily, it might look like your purse or account is depleted, God has a way of supernaturally meeting your needs. Help arising for you in places you least expect them. There are things money cannot buy that is supernaturally bestowed upon you.
When you give material things to your pastors, this act causes them to give thanks to God on your behalf. “Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God” (Phil 4:15-18). Giving to them is what it really truly means you are giving to God, this gesture is wellpleasing to Him. They gladly double up their efforts in meeting your spiritual needs, they are happy their labour over you is being appreciated.
